The spotted deer belongs to the artiodactyla order.


DIET

They are herbivorous, ruminants and mainly feed on foliage, grasses, fruit and reeds.


REPRODUCTION - LIFESPAN

Sexual maturity is reached between 8 and 12 months
Rutting takes place in May in central provinces, August/September in southern regions and in winter in the north. 
Gestation: 7 ½ months
1 young per year
Births take place throughout the year.
Lifespan: 12 years in the wild, up to 22 years in captivity.
 

LIFESTYLE

They live in groups of 10 to 60 individuals typically with 2 males.
Their endurance running reaches 30 to 40 km/h for several kilometres and they can accelerate very quickly to an average of 68 km/h for a sprint, peaking at 95 km/h over short distances. They can also jump up to a maximum of 2 metres high and up to 7 metres in length.
 

Habitat

Spotted deer live in dense and open forest, as well as open and woody savannah, near water.
