DIET

In its country of origin sika deer eat mainly bamboo fulfilling up to 80% of its winter requirements. The staple diet comprises thorns, grasses and herbaceous forage, supplemented by leaves, conifers, fruit, mushrooms and moss.

LIFESTYLE

The sika deer is not the most gregarious species and tends to live in small groups of various sizes. The adult males are usually solitary, but they can also form quite unstable groups. The females stay in herds with their young from the current and previous years. In open environments there are herds of 40 to 50 individuals while in forest environments the group size is less than 2 animals.
