The raccoon dog is omnivorous.
On land it hunts: insects, small rodents, amphibians, birds, eggs and fish that it catches in lakes and rivers.
The raccoon dog originates in East Asia. Previously it was only found in eastern Siberia, northern China, Vietnam, Korea and Japan.
Hunted intensively for its fur, it was introduced to Europe between 1927 and 1957.
ReproductionMating takes place at the end of winter between January and March.
After a gestation period of roughly 59 to 64 weeks, the female delivers a litter of 5 to 7 young.
