Equus asinus

The breed was recognized in the 90s. A ‘turtledove grey’ coat and the so-called St. Andrew’s cross, a well-marked dorsal stripe distinguishes it.
 

DIET

The donkey has a herbivorous diet: it feeds on grass, flowers and hay.
It can drink up to 15 litres of water per day.
 

REPRODUCTION - lifespan

It reaches sexual maturity between 1 ½ to 2 years and breeds between April and July.
Gestation lasts from 12 to 13 months.
One litter is usually a single young weighing 10 to 40 kg.
It usually lives 30-40 years, but can sometimes live for 50 years.

Breeding areas are spread between Provence, the Southern Alps, Dauphiné, Savoie and southern Cévennes.
