It is a local breed that is endangered. In 1981, there were 60 sires from 30 breeders.
Remarkably well adjusted to extensive mountain stockbreeding, it inhabited oak forests in the Basque Country.
 
Reckless deforestation, the move away from traditional cultures and its poor suitability to industrial breeding contributed to its disappearance.
 
Its salted hams with the famous Salies de Béarn salt made the ham famous.
