Its particular morphology enables it to live in the harsh mountain climate. Thanks to its thick horsehair and its long black or chestnut coat, it can stay at altitude all year round.
The Pottok is a breed of pony native to the Pyrenees west of the Basque Country. Of very ancient origin (Palaeolithic features remain unchanged still today), it has morphological similarities with horses in cave paintings in the same region. Used for centuries by the inhabitants of the Basque Country for varied agricultural work, it was also put to work in mines.
