The Merens horse reaches sexual maturity at 18 months for males and 2 years for females. 
The period of reproduction extends from February to July.
Following a gestation period of 11 months, the female gives birth to a single foal.
The Mérens horse can live until the age of 30.


Close to distinction in the 1970s, the number of Mérens horses, in Ariège then across its entire territory, as well as in many European countries, has significantly increased.
The breed seems to have levelled out at around 500 births per year.
The Mérens horse must be purebred.
Over 500 breeders and users belong to SHERPA France, national association for Mérens, in France.
