It is still relatively common in the Himalayas, between 2,500 and 4,800 m, where it inhabits open beech, oak and rhododendron forests.
 
To feed, it spends hours digging the ground looking for roots, bulbs, seeds, larvae, worms, etc.
 
The laying of 4 to 8 russet-speckled eggs takes place in April. The incubation period is 27 to 28 days.
