The emu is omnivorous.
The proportion of plants and animals consumed varies at different periods of the year.
In terms of plants it eats seeds, fruit, flowers and roots, insects (ladybirds, caterpillars, ants, grasshoppers) and small vertebrates.
 

Reproduction - lifespan

Emu reproduction is based on polyandry: the male incubates and takes care of the emu chicks.
Couples form in December and January. They stay together for 5 to 6 months.
Mating and egg laying takes place from February to July.
 

Habitat - distribution

Emus can be observed in much of Australia, where they live in a wide range of environments: forests and semi-arid plains.

Emus are generally sedentary, but they can run long distances, they can run between. Otherwise, they are nomadic and can run long distances looking for water and food.
 Adults can cover 15 to 25 km/day.
