It originated in Indochina and was considered the most rare species of the family until 1923.
Raised in captivity since 1925 it is still rare in the wild.
In relation to pheasants of the same genre it is characterised by a short incubation period of 21 days (25 days for the Swinhoe) and adult plumage as early as the first autumn after its birth.
