Cygnus atrata

This swan is the emblem of Western Australia, its black silhouette features on the coat of arms of this state.
It is found in Australia and Tasmania. It was introduced to New Zealand where it is currently well established after total extinction due to intensive hunting.

The adult has black plumage on the whole apart from the alula, flight and external secondary feathers that are white. The bill is red.
It is a gregarious species. They gather on lakes in large numbers, up to several thousands. After reproduction, they form groups to moult and then post-nuptial dispersion may be observed.
